The witness watches aircraft over Colorado Springs as a habit, which is worth noting: it makes him a comparatively practised observer of that airspace. On a clear evening between 8 and 9:30 p.m. a very bright star first caught his attention; he had been watching it for five to ten seconds when movement entered his left peripheral vision.
