Short overview

A six-page U.S. Air Force Mission Report (MISREP) on a reconnaissance sortie of more than 18 hours flown on May 5–6, 2022, under Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. It records that the crew periodically observed several UAP in its target area and accompanies the infrared still images DOW-UAP-PR130 and DOW-UAP-PR131.

Why this is interesting

The UAP passage is only a few lines within a routine report on signals and video reconnaissance. At 20:26 Zulu on May 5, 2022, while scanning a point of interest, the crew periodically saw UAP flying “sporatically” (sic) within the target area; according to a sensor whose designation is partly redacted, they travelled at between 80 and 180 mph, their size was put at about one to two meters, the altitude could not be determined, and the mission was not hindered. The observation block adds the aircraft’s own data—flight level 200, 100 knots indicated airspeed, a range of 4.98 nautical miles, observation by full-motion video—and, notably, lists the observed activity in the form field as “UAS,” commonly the abbreviation for unmanned aircraft systems, while the free text speaks of UAP. Call sign, aircraft type, tail number, bases and parts of the coordinates are redacted under 1.4a and 1.4g, names under (b)(6). As the official description stresses, the figures reflect the reporter’s estimate at the time, not a finding about the objects.

Selected passages

  • “WE WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE ALTITUDE. THE SIZE OF THE UAPs WERE APPROXIMATELY 1-2 METERS. THE UAPs DID NOT HINDER THE MISSION.”
  • “PERIODICALLY OBSERVED UAPS FLYING SPORATICALLY WITHIN THE TARGET AREA OF 92AS.”

Background

This document is a Mission Report (MISREP), a standardized reporting form the U.S. military uses to record the circumstances surrounding its operations. U.S. military services often use MISREPs to report unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). The GENTEXT, or “general text” section of these reports often contains important qualitative, contextual information, distinguishing it from the more quantitative, or numerical, data found elsewhere in the report. This mission report accompanies still imagery derived from an infrared system aboard a U.S. military platform in 2022 (DOW-UAP-PR130 and DOW-UAP-PR 131). A U.S. military operator reported observing UAP “flying sporadically within the target area… at various speeds between 80 and 180 miles per hour.” The reporter estimates the size of the UAP as between 1 and 2 meters (approximately 3-6 feet), and states that they were unable to determine the altitude of the phenomena. All descriptive and estimative language contained in this report reflects the reporter’s subjective interpretation at the time of the event. Such characterizations should not be interpreted as a conclusive indication of the presence or absence of any intrinsic object features or performance characteristics.
