On June 12, 1790 at 5 a.m., several farmers in Alençon, Normandy, France saw a large sphere surrounded by flames that flew with a whistling sound. The object slowed, wavered, and moved toward a hilltop, where it tore plants out of the ground. The intense heat set grass and small trees alight; by evening the sphere was still warm.
