Niagara Falls, New York: Stationary luminous body seen during the Leonid meteor shower
Between 2:00 and 5:15 a.m. on 13 November 1833, during the Leonid meteor shower, Horatio A. Parsons saw a large stationary luminous body near the zenith at Niagara Falls, New York; at Poland, Ohio, Judge Calvin Pease and Jared P. Kirtland watched a luminous body for more than an hour.
Background
During the prominent Leonid meteor shower, between 2:00 and 5:15 a.m., Horatio A. Parsons saw a large luminous body "like a square table" nearly in the zenith at Niagara Falls, New York; it was stationary and emitted large streams of light. At Poland, Ohio, a luminous body was distinctly visible in the northeast sky for more than an hour. Judge Calvin Pease noticed it at 4:00 a.m. in Ursa Major in the shape of a "pruning hook" and watched it settle toward the horizon. Jared P. Kirtland said it resembled a "new moon" and watched it disappear around 5:15 a.m. Eberhart cites Denison Olmsted's observations on the meteors of 13 November 1833 in the American Journal of Science (1834). The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
