Background

At 8:15 p.m. two French observers in Saigon, Vietnam, watched a slow-moving red fireball that appeared larger than Venus. It took 7–8 minutes to traverse an arc of 50°–60° toward the east-southeast. It disappeared in a cloud of moderate opacity. Lt. Guiberteau judged its altitude to be beneath the cirrus cloud layer. Hervé Faye reported the observation in the Comptes Rendus of the French Academy of Sciences in 1885. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
