Grahamstown, South Africa: Astronomer sees long "comet" travel along the horizon
On October 27, 1890, from 7:45 to 8:32 p.m., amateur astronomer Lindsay Eddie in Grahamstown (modern Makhanda), South Africa, watched an object described as a comet travel on a nearly horizontal path around the western and southern horizon.
Background
At 7:45 p.m. amateur astronomer Lindsay Eddie in Grahamstown (modern Makhanda), South Africa, saw an object described as a "comet". It travelled nearly due west for 100° on a nearly horizontal path around the western and southern horizon. Its length was about 90°. The object faded away in the southeast at 8:32 p.m. Nature reported the observation in November 1890 under the title "A New Comet (?)". The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
