Background
Between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. William H. Walters watched an object land in a meadow less than a mile west of Birmingham, Iowa. He approached it with a few other men, but it rose slowly with a whirring sound and sailed away to the northwest. The object appeared to be 100 feet long and 20 feet high, tapering at each end, and carried a large white light and two smaller red and green lights. The report appeared in the Chicago Inter Ocean on April 17, 1897. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
