Background

At 9:45 p.m. a crowd gathered at the corner of West Chicago and North Hamlin Avenues in Chicago to watch a mysterious light for 30 minutes. Witnesses R. W. Allen and George F. Pierce did not think the object was a star. Allen described a perceptible undulation in its motion, with dips following one another at about the rhythm of a pulse beat. The light moved very rapidly, showed distinct red, white and green colors and disappeared toward the northwest near the horizon, vanishing by degrees. The sighting was reported by the Chicago Sunday Inter-Ocean on April 11, 1897. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
