Massillon, Ohio: Neighbors see sail-and-wheel airship, airship letter found
At 9:20 a.m. on April 20, 1897, Mrs. Burkhardt and her neighbor Mrs. Case in Massillon, Ohio, saw a flying object with a large sail and a windmill-like wheel at the rear; the same day a letter signed "on board airship" was found.
Background
At 9:20 a.m. a Mrs. Burkhardt of Columbia Heights on the southwest side of Massillon, Ohio, saw a "new fangled kite" in the air and pointed it out to her neighbor, Mrs. Case. They noticed it had a large sail and was propelled by a wheel like a windmill's at the rear. Mrs. Case's son Bert estimated its altitude at 1,500–2,000 feet. Frank Reed found a letter on his premises, dated the same day, from a William R. Harris "on board airship, bound for Cuba." The Toledo Blade and the Massillon Independent reported the sighting. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
