Quincy, Illinois: Many residents watch winged cigar-shaped airship over the Mississippi
At 11 p.m. on 10 April 1897 many residents of Quincy, Illinois, watched a bright white light flanked by red and green lights fly low over the Mississippi River; it was attached to a metallic cigar-shaped object with two wings.
Background
At 11:00 p.m. many residents on the west side of Quincy, Illinois, observed a bright white light with red and green lights on either side flying low above the Mississippi River, at one point no more than 400–500 feet above the ground. The light was attached to a metallic cigar-shaped object with two wings extending from its sides and some kind of superstructure on top; witnesses estimated its length at 50–100 feet. The object ascended, moved east, south and west, hovered above South Park for a few minutes, moved north and stopped again. It then reversed direction and left toward the south at "tremendous speed." Eberhart cites the Quincy Morning Whig of 11 April 1897 as well as Neeley (JUFOS 1979) and Cohen. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
