Netherlands/Germany: Mosquito crew sees fire balls
USAAF pilots Lt. Jack Green and Lt. Warren Barber encountered two fire balls pacing their Mosquito reconnaissance aircraft over the Netherlands and northern Germany on three occasions during a night flight. The navigator likened them to bright fog lights ascending to extreme altitudes.

On January 2, 1945 at 2:30, Lieut. Jack Green as pilot and Lieut. Warren Barber as navigator of the 653rd Bombardment Squadron flew a reconnaissance mission in a de Havilland Mosquito over the Netherlands and northern Germany. They twice sighted fire-like spheres, which accompanied their aircraft three times.
Description of the Sighting
Barber described the objects as paired bright lights, similar to powerful searchlights, which climbed to between 60,000 and 70,000 feet. The encounters took place during the flight at night.
Context and Significance
This was a military contact with unidentified lights during a routine USAAF reconnaissance flight in the Second World War. The Mosquito served primarily for photo-reconnaissance missions in Europe.
