Mozambique Channel: Passengers on the Llandovery Castle see cigar-shaped object
At 11:00 p.m. on a night in July 1947, Mrs. A. M. King and another passenger on the deck of the Union-Castle liner Llandovery Castle in the Mozambique Channel saw a metallic, cigar-shaped object that shone a beam onto the water and paced the ship about 20 feet above the sea.
Background
At 11:00 p.m. Mrs. A. M. King was with another passenger on the deck of the Union-Castle Mail steamship Llandovery Castle in the Mozambique Channel when they noticed a star-like object traveling fast toward the ship. It shone a strong beam of light onto the water within 150 feet of the ship and descended, the beam shortening and growing brighter as it neared the water. When the light switched off they saw a metallic object like a cigar with the end cut off, which stayed about 20 feet above the sea and moved parallel with the ship; King estimated it at about four times the ship's length and four times its height. After a few seconds a large flame erupted from its rear and it vanished soundlessly in the darkness.
