Background

At 1:00 p.m. on July 8, 1947, several hundred people on Santa Catalina Island, off Long Beach, California, saw a flight of six disc-shaped objects pass over the island in two formations of three each. Among the witnesses were Army Air Corps veterans Bob Jung, Kenneth Johnson, and Alvio Russo. Jung was able to take two photographs of one of the discs; one shows a single oval, light-colored object of considerable size with the superstructure of a ship in the foreground, and the printed copy is described as highly retouched. Russo estimated the speed of the objects at 850 mph as they came from the northeast and disappeared over the hills south of Avalon Bay. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
