Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland: Airbase mechanics see disc and a hole cut in a cloud
At 5:30 p.m. on 10 July 1947 three civilian airline mechanics from Ernest Harmon AFB, driving near Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland, saw a bluish-black exhaust trail that had cut a hole through clouds; one of them saw a disc emerge at great speed, and two photos were taken of the trail.
Background
Three civilian airline mechanics at Ernest Harmon AFB (now Stephenville International Airport), John N. Mehrman Jr., Robert W. Leidy and John E. Woodruff, were returning from a fishing trip on a mountain road near Stephenville Crossing. They saw a bluish-black exhaust trail that had cut through some clouds, leaving a "hole". Woodruff saw a disc-shaped object, the apparent size of a C-54 transport plane, come out of the clouds at a terrific rate of speed. The hole remained in the cloud for more than an hour, and Leidy took two Kodachrome photos of the exhaust trail. The sighting later impressed Project Sign personnel enough that they asked questions about UFO effects on clouds; the case appears in three PURSUE documents. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
