Background

Project Sign incident #121 records a sighting from the air by an Eastern Air Lines pilot near Cartersville, Georgia (34°10'N 84°49'W), on 9 January 1948 at 23:30. One object at about 3,000 feet, light sky-blue, circular except for a flat top quarter ('pot-shaped'), heading about 175° magnetic, with no sound and no exhaust trail. When it crossed the witness's path only an intense blue flame could be seen; shortly afterwards the flame sputtered, turned immediately earthward and died, with nothing seen hitting the ground. The witness stated the object did not have the curved trajectory of a wingless missile and, from wartime contact with RAF pilots, compared it to the buzz bombs they had chased at night. The file also records a later remark by the witness about cattle deaths at a farm in Newnan, Georgia; the summary finds no basis for a connection. The details are taken from the records released by the U.S. Department of War (record code 38_143685_box7 Incident Summaries 101-172 (Project Sign)) and do not represent an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
