Background

Project Sign incident #122 records a ground observation at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, on 5 April 1948 (time not stated) by a trained balloon observer of the Geophysics Lab Section. The object was large, grey-white, of rounded and indistinct form, very high, silent, and moved faster than any known aircraft; its tactics are described as erratic, completing a large loop after a downward descent, then soaring upward and disappearing suddenly after about 30 seconds in clear weather (CAVU). The checklist remarks that this was evidently one of two objects sighted by another witness that veered to the right and down, that all witnesses agreed it was very high and moved faster than any known aircraft, and that it was apparently not manned, judging from the violent manoeuvres performed at high speed. Statements of the other witnesses are referenced in companion reports. The details are taken from the records released by the U.S. Department of War (record code 38_143685_box7 Incident Summaries 101-172 (Project Sign)) and do not represent an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
