Background

Incident summary no. 199 of the Project Sign files records an observation at 1430 PST on 30 October 1948 by the radar observer of an F-82 of McChord Air Force Base flying a northerly course at 240 mph about 15 miles northwest of Grays Harbor, Washington, roughly 10 miles off the coast. He first noticed a yellow object at his 1 o'clock position that seemed to string out into an in-line formation of 10 to 20 objects; they turned white, came around to the 3 o'clock position in the same formation, made a turn back and finally disappeared on a northerly course. The objects were in sight about 20 seconds, made no sound, showed no exhaust trail and no aggressive or evasive tactics; their shape seemed egg-like and they appeared translucent just before they seemed to dissolve rather than fade with distance, and neither size nor speed could be estimated. The pilot, busy at the time, did not see the objects, the observer at no time identified any object, and the summary notes fog and smoke in the vicinity according to weather reports. Crew names appear in the file but are not reproduced here. The details are taken from the records released by the U.S. Department of War (record code 38_143685_box7 Incident Summaries 173-233, incident 199, pp. 57–58) and do not represent an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
