Background

At 6:15 p.m. on March 15, 1950, Craig Hunter, a medical doctor of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, was stopped with car trouble on the side of the road between Clearfield and Penfield, Pennsylvania, when he heard a 'hissing, whistling sound.' He looked up and saw 'a circular object' 250 to 400 feet above him, traveling northwest, about 150 feet in circumference and composed of three rotating concentric circles, two of them apparently turning in opposite directions. At the center it was 15 to 20 feet thick, its speed 60 to 70 mph, and the noise suggested rocket propulsion to him. Suddenly it emitted a fireball that was visible above the road for about 30 seconds, and the object moved away to the west after he had had it in sight for about 2.5 minutes. The Baltimore Sun reported the sighting on March 16, 1950, and the Galveston Daily News on March 18, 1950, with a rough sketch by the doctor. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
