Background

Radio broadcaster Henry J. Taylor announced on his syndicated radio program Your Land and Mine the "wonderful news" that saucers are in fact US secret weapons, which he said would reassure the nation once the US Air Force confirmed it. Within days the story was reshaped to credit specifically the Navy's allegedly "top secret" Vought XF5U Flying Flapjack. The Miami News and U.S. News and World Report carried the claim. According to Eberhart, the story was apparently disinformation planted by former Hollywood writers on the Political and Psychological Warfare staff of the CIA Office of Policy Coordination, headed by Joseph Bryan III, later president and board chairman of NICAP. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
