Elgin, Illinois: Ground observer tracks rising light, F-86 scrambled from O'Hare
At 10:10 p.m. on August 21, 1952, Ground Observer Corps supervisor D. C. Scott watched a yellowish-white light repeatedly rise and descend northeast of Elgin, Illinois; after he alerted the Chicago Filter Center, at least one F-86 was scrambled from O'Hare Airport, and the light blinked out on the jet's fourth pass.
Background
At 10:10 p.m. on August 21, 1952, Ground Observer Corps Supervisor D. C. Scott spotted a yellowish-white light flying at 2,000 feet northeast of Elgin, Illinois. Several times it rose to 5,000 feet within three minutes, hovered, and descended again. Scott alerted Capt. Everett A. Turner at the Chicago Filter Center, who told him to call again once the light settled down. After one hour and 23 minutes the light began to hover, Scott called again, and Turner had at least one F-86 Sabre jet scrambled from O'Hare Airport in Chicago. The pilot made four passes between 10,000 and 2,000 feet; on the fourth pass he headed directly toward the light, which blinked out. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
