RAF Little Rissington, England: Meteor crew sees three discs, fighters chase radar targets
On the afternoon of 21 October 1952, Flight Lt. Michael Swiney and Royal Navy Lt. David Crofts, flying a Meteor T.7 out of RAF Little Rissington, saw three circular white objects that turned out to be discs; two Meteor F.8 fighters from RAF Tangmere failed to intercept three unknown radar targets.
Background
In the afternoon Flight Lt. Michael Swiney and a student pilot, Royal Navy Lt. David Crofts, took off in a Meteor T.7 trainer from RAF Little Rissington, Gloucestershire, for a high-altitude navigation exercise at 35,000 feet. Shortly after breaking out of cloud while climbing through 13,000β14,000 feet, they saw three circular white objects ahead. As the aircraft closed and turned to avoid them, the objects became visible as discs; they disappeared quickly when the pilot looked away briefly. Two Meteor F.8 fighters were scrambled from RAF Tangmere in West Sussex to chase three unknown radar targets moving at 3,000 mph but failed to intercept them.
