Background

At 11:15 p.m. farmer Lloyd C. Booth, just north of Conway, South Carolina, heard a commotion among his animals, grabbed his .22 revolver and saw an oblong, lighted object 10 feet above the trees, moving slowly or hovering with a low humming sound. He fired at it twice. The first bullet bounced off with a metallic sound; at the second shot the object tilted slightly, ascended at a 65° angle to the west at 600–700 mph and disappeared. One of his cows had died the previous evening. The Columbia newspaper The State reported the case in February 1953, including a CAA man's statement that Booth had seen a Navy blimp; the case is in Brad Sparks's list of Blue Book unknowns. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
