Mitchel Air Force Base, New York: Glowing oval ruled a meteor, witness reports a turret
On 28 January 1953, Maj. Geyer at Mitchel AFB near Uniondale, New York, investigated civilian and military reports of an oval object glowing in different colors and quickly classified it as a meteor; witness Marie Armstrong Essipoff later said it had wobbled and had a turret on top.
Background
A Maj. Geyer at Mitchel AFB, now closed, near Uniondale, New York, investigated reports of a UFO seen by both civilian and military witnesses: an oval object glowing with different colors and having a tail or projection. He quickly concluded that it was a meteor and submitted a report to Project Blue Book. One of the witnesses, author Marie Armstrong Essipoff, later wrote to Donald Keyhoe that she had told Geyer the object wobbled and had a turret on top. She drew a picture, and Geyer said it looked like one of their flight simulators, but that it was "still a meteor." Eberhart cites Loren E. Gross (1953 supplemental notes) and Swords. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
