Hässleholm, Sweden: Transair DC-3 crew sees a shining object pass below their aircraft
At 2:37 p.m. on December 17, 1953, the pilot and the flight engineer of a Transair DC-3 near Hässleholm, Sweden, saw a shining metal, spherical-elliptical object pass about 600 meters below them in the opposite direction for six to seven seconds.
Background
The report
According to an Air Intelligence Information Report of January 13, 1954, from the Office of the U.S. Air Attaché in Stockholm, the DC-3 was flying from Bulltofta to Bromma at about 2,150 meters when the crew saw the object. It left no exhaust or condensation trail. The pilot estimated its speed at the speed of sound and thought it might be an unmanned “robot.”
Official response
The Swedish Defense Staff stated that it knew of no Swedish aircraft in the area and that an investigation was under way; the chief of the Swedish Air Force said radar records would be checked. The attaché noted that his office was trying to obtain further information.
