Background
At 8:00 p.m. on July 28, 1954, Capt. Jan P. Boshoff and five officers of the Dutch ocean liner SS Groote Beer saw a moonlike object rising out of the Atlantic Ocean 90 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. They watched it through a sextant, which allowed them to estimate its rate of ascent at half a degree in 2 minutes and its distance at 2.5 miles from the ship. After 10 minutes it disappeared behind some low clouds. The New York Times and other newspapers reported the sighting on July 30, 1954. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
