Agana, Guam: F-86D pilot Ted Brunson circled by round white object he cannot close on
At 2:10 a.m. on January 1, 1957, USAF 1st Lt. Ted Brunson, flying an F-86D interceptor over Guam, observed a round white object that kept turning with him, passed between his aircraft and the city of Agana and repeatedly circled him at 20,000 to 30,000 feet until low fuel forced him to return to Andersen Air Force Base.
Background
At 2:10 a.m. on January 1, 1957, USAF 1st Lt. Ted Brunson was piloting an F-86D jet interceptor over Guam when he observed a round, white object flying beneath his aircraft. As he attempted to close with it, the object kept turning with him, always staying on the outside of his turn; it passed between his interceptor and the city of Agana, but he saw no silhouette, only a maneuvering light. The object headed south for about 10 miles at his altitude of roughly 20,000 feet, climbed to about 30,000 feet, moved directly over his aircraft and began circling him. Brunson engaged afterburner and turned into the object to head it off, but it continued circling and he could not gain on it. The object then moved west, doubled back and passed over the fighter again 10,000 to 15,000 feet above him, circling him once more when he turned to keep it in sight. With fuel running low, Brunson broke off and returned to Andersen Air Force Base. The entry cites Sparks's list of Blue Book unknowns (p. 249) and Loren E.
