Background

At 11:55 p.m. a swiftly moving unknown rectangular target was picked up on Civil Aeronautics Administration radar at Los Angeles International Airport, about 10 miles to the northwest. Tower operator Norman Johnson said that at a distance of 40 miles it came to an abrupt halt and reversed course in about three seconds, returned to about 20 miles, reversed again and disappeared off the scope. About five minutes later two more fast objects appeared and also left the scope to the northwest; a minute or so later a fourth object sped off the scope at an estimated 3,600 mph. Two F-89 jet fighters were dispatched to the area from Oxnard AFB, and the airport radar's electricity shut off at 12:07 a.m., which Eberhart calls probably coincidental. Eberhart cites NICAP (“Rectangular Targets Tracked on Radar? Maybe Not”), Sparks, the UFO Investigator of July 1957 and Powell. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
