Background

A nationwide Trendex poll on UFOs showed that 25.3% of Americans thought flying saucers were from outer space. A further 52.9% were skeptical. Many of the skeptics thought the objects were hallucinations, weather balloons, or US or foreign secret weapons. The results were reported by the Roanoke Times on August 25, 1957, and in NICAP's UFO Investigator in its August/September 1957 issue. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
