Background
At 11:10 a.m. three witnesses in Santa Barbara, California, including H. F. Hoag from Victoria, British Columbia, were watching a jet's vapor trail from La Mesa Park when a red object about 100 feet in diameter sped by. The object was silent and crossed a 90° arc of the sky in about 15 seconds. At the same time the witnesses could see the jet plane over Carpinteria to the east. The Santa Barbara News-Press reported the sighting on October 1, 1957. Eberhart's entry also notes a WATE radio broadcast on October 2 that an Air Force jet interceptor had pursued a radar UFO the size of a B-29, without placing it in Santa Barbara. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
