Background

At 6:10 p.m. the car engine of fighter pilot 1st Lt. Joseph F. Long stalled 30 miles west of Tonopah, Nevada. He heard a high-pitched whining noise and saw four domed, saucer-shaped objects about 50 feet across, landed on the right side of the road some 900–1,200 feet away, glowing brightly and standing on three landing gears; he estimated them at 10–15 feet tall. When he approached to within 50 feet of the nearest object, the hum grew in intensity and his ears began to hurt. The objects took off abruptly, retracting the landing gears, rose about 50 feet and crossed the highway to the north at about 10 mph; the sighting lasted 20 minutes in total. Shallow, bowl-shaped ground impressions in the shape of a triangle were found at the landing site. Eberhart cites NICAP, the Blue Book unknowns list (Sparks) and Hynek's UFO Report.
