On the night of December 30, 1957, George Chowanski was cutting wood at his home in Schooley's Mountain, New Jersey, when his two dogs began to bark and howl. He heard a whirring noise like an electric shaver for one minute, then saw a saucer-shaped object, 5 feet high and 15 feet wide, hovering about 2 feet above the ground in a grove of trees 100 feet from the back porch. Three individuals came out of the craft and walked about in the clearing; one bent over and carried something heavy back to the object. After 2–3 minutes the object slowly rose, spiraling through the tall trees, and flew off. Local newspapers reported the case in March 1958. The account follows the entry in George M.
