Offutt AFB, Nebraska: SAC officers and tower crew watch hovering cylinder and black specks
At 6:40 p.m. on September 8, 1958, SAC Operations Officer Maj. Paul A. Duich, other officers, airmen and Offutt tower personnel watched a brilliant-white, vertical cylindrical object hovering in the west.
Background
At 6:40 p.m. on September 8, 1958, just after sunset, Maj. Paul A. Duich, officers of the USAF Ballistic Missiles Division, other base personnel and Offutt tower staff at Offutt AFB, Omaha, Nebraska, saw a brilliant-white, elongated cylinder hovering vertically in the west. After several minutes it turned dull orange-red, and a swarm of about 10 black specks seemed to move around its lower end for about a minute before disappearing. The cylinder then rotated, drifted slowly south and descended over about 5 minutes, and finally faded into the haze while rotating the other way. A USAF colonel took several color photos with a 35mm camera on a tripod but later said nothing came out. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
