United States: Air Force inspector general tells base commanders UFOs are serious business
On December 24, 1959, Maj. Gen. Richard E. O'Keefe, acting inspector general of the Air Force, instructed every US air base commander that UFOs were serious USAF business and specified how investigators should be equipped.
Background
Maj. Gen. Richard E. O'Keefe, acting inspector general of the Air Force, issued instructions on 'UFO business' to every air base commander in the United States. The document, headed 'UFOs Serious Business', was not intended for public distribution, but NICAP obtained a copy. It stated that UFOs must be rapidly and accurately identified as serious USAF business in the Zone of Interior. UFO investigators were to be equipped with binoculars, a camera, a Geiger counter and a magnifying glass and have a source for sample containers. O'Keefe asked that UFO explanations be 'reasonable and knowledgeable'. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
