Background

At 3:10 p.m. Ray Hawks was operating a farm tractor at Left Hand Canyon near Altona, Colorado, when he heard a muffled explosion and saw a disc drop vertically out of the clouds. It stopped in midair about 650 feet from him and 200 feet above the ground, wobbling, and looked like two concave discs joined at the rim, dull aluminium in colour. Bluish smoke issued from an apparent gap in its surface and an electric hum seemed to come from inside. The smoking section was withdrawn inside and a new section appeared to replace it, settling in with a click. The hum increased, the object seemed surrounded by a heat haze, and it shot up into the clouds and vanished. The Boulder Daily Camera reported the case on August 12, 1960, and the APRO Bulletin covered it in September 1960. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
