Background

At 6:10 p.m., Rev. Lionel Browning and his wife were looking at a rainbow outside their rectory in Cressy, Tasmania, when they saw a gray, cigar-shaped object emerge from a raincloud. It had 4 or 5 dark vertical bands around its circumference and an aerial array projecting from the top; Browning estimated it to be 100 feet long and about 4 miles away, moving north at about 60–70 mph at some 400 feet. After one minute it stopped and was joined by 5–6 smaller objects emerging from a cloud, and after another minute all of them abruptly reversed back into the rain squall at the same speed. The Australian Department of Air conducted an enquiry into the sighting, dated 19 November 1960. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
