Background

On January 10, 1961, a US Navy A-1 Polaris missile was launched from a ground pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida. A large disc appeared somewhat close to the rocket and caused the tracking mechanism to lock on to it; the disc was about 20–25 feet in diameter and about 6–8 feet thick at its center. A bit downrange, the tracking system returned to the Polaris. Ground observers and the primary witness, Clark C. McClelland, watching with 10x50 binoculars, lost sight of the object as it continued to move away. The original investigation was conducted by McClelland and his Florida NICAP subcommittee. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
