Background
At 7:45 p.m. on April 24, 1962, Alice W. Gasslein and her mother, Estelle W. Wilkinson, were driving near their home in Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, when they saw a large domed object emitting flashes of green light moving over the roofs of nearby homes. A rotating band around the main body consisted of a series of square windows from which came shafts of bright white light. They drove home to alert Alice's husband, Joseph A. Gasslein, an aviation worker at Boeing; by then the object was about half a mile away, giving off colored lights. Around 8:10 p.m. the object returned, flying toward the Gassleins' home south of Walsh Park only 20 feet above ground level, passed over their backyard, made a sharp left turn and moved away to the east.
