Background

Background

Gloria Lee, a prominent contactee from California and founder of the Cosmon Research Foundation, claimed from 1953 onward to be in telepathic communication with J.W., a being from Venus. She published books of supposedly dictated messages about cosmic hierarchies and coming changes to the world.

Course of Events

In September 1962 she took blueprints for a spacecraft, channelled from J.W., to government offices in Washington, D.C., but without success. J.W. criticised human wars and nuclear weapons and instructed her to fast for peace until a "light elevator" would take her to Jupiter. The fast began on September 23 and lasted until November 28 β€” about 66 days without food. Her husband, aircraft engineer William H. Byrd, finally called an ambulance, which took her to George Washington University Hospital.

Consequences and Significance

Lee died on December 3, 1962. After her death she was said to continue channelling through the medium Nada-Yolanda (Pauline Sharpe) at the Mark-Age MetaCenter in Miami. The case points to the risks of esoteric contact claims in the UFO scene of the 1960s.
