Charlton, Wiltshire: Farmer finds crater with central hole and four slots in his field
On July 16, 1963, farmer Roy Blanchard of Charlton, Wiltshire, found a burned crater with a deep central hole and four slots around it across his potato and barley fields; a military investigation followed.
Background
Farmer Roy Blanchard of Charlton, Wiltshire, England, discovered a strange crater overlapping his potato and barley fields, about 8 feet wide and 4 inches deep. A hole in the centre was 3 feet deep and less than a foot across; all vegetation inside the circle was burned down to bare earth, and four slots, each about 4 feet long and a foot wide, surrounded it. A small piece of metal was found. Astronomer Patrick Moore said a "shrimp-sized meteorite" had caused the crater, but a military investigation found no burn or scratch marks and no trace of an explosion. Flying Saucer Review covered the case in 1963 and again in 1966. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
