Stallion Site, New Mexico: Two radar targets maneuver in tandem and send IFF codes

Between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on May 15, 1964, surveillance and FPS-16 radars at Stallion Site, the northern range of the Holloman–White Sands complex east of San Antonio, New Mexico, tracked two targets performing precise tandem maneuvers; one operator saw two brown football-shaped objects at very low altitude, and IFF codes were received on two frequencies.

Background

Between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., two targets were simultaneously tracked on surveillance and FPS-16 radars at Stallion Site, the most northerly range of the Army-controlled Holloman–White Sands complex a few miles east of San Antonio, New Mexico. The targets were north of the radar site, performing 'perfect, precise flight maneuvers' in tandem, involving separations and rejoins and 'up-and-down pogo maneuvers'. One radar operator obtained a visual sighting of two brown-colored, football-shaped objects flying at very low altitude; they were lost from view behind buildings at the site. The two targets were displayed as skin paints, but IFF transponder codes were also received alternately on two different frequencies. The case was documented by NICAP and by Coral Lorenzen in Fate magazine (1964) and her 1966 book. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
