Background

At 12:45 a.m. Marianne Hatzenbuhler, staying with her mother-in-law in New Berlin, New York, saw a bright, humming light descend over New York State Route 8, move along a creek, appear to examine and pace passing cars and accelerate toward her, before it slowly ascended the mountain to the north-northeast and settled just below the ridge about three-quarters of a mile away. Watching through binoculars from about 1:05 a.m., she saw the stationary object on what appeared to be legs, with light radiating from beneath, while five or six unusually tall men in dark wetsuit-like clothing worked on it with wrenches and screwdrivers. A second, similar machine arrived from the west-southwest and its occupants joined the repairs, cutting cables and fitting what seemed to be a motor into the base of the first machine; the work lasted until 5:05 a.m., after which both machines departed to the west-southwest. The objects were estimated at 26–30 feet in diameter. The next day she found two triangular sets of impressions with sides of 15–20 feet and later a piece of cable that resembled aluminum but did not share its properties. Eberhart cites Ted Bloecher and Berthold E. Schwarz in Flying Saucer Review (1974–1975). The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
