Baldone, Latvia: Astronomers see three greenish lights around a sphere move apart

At 9:35 p.m. on 26 July 1965, astronomers Robert Vitolniek, Ian Melderis and Esmeralda Vitolniek at the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory in Latvia saw a slowly drifting object that through a telescope looked like three greenish lights around a larger central sphere; the lights later separated and disappeared.

Background

At 9:35 p.m. astronomers Robert Vitolniek, Ian Melderis and Esmeralda Vitolniek at the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory in Latvia were observing noctilucent clouds when they saw a star-like object drifting slowly westward. Through binoculars the light appeared sharply defined; through a telescope it looked like an array of three greenish lights around a larger central sphere. After 20 minutes the three smaller lights moved away from the central one, and they disappeared into the distance at 10:00 p.m. Eberhart cites Felix Ziegel in Soviet Life (February 1968), James E. McDonald's statement at the US House Committee on Science and Astronautics symposium of 29 July 1968, and Hobana and Weverbergh. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
