Pretoria, South Africa: Two constables see domed disc lift off highway, road surface burns
Just after midnight on 16 September 1965, constables John Lockem and Koos de Klerk on the Pretoria–Bronkhorstspruit highway in South Africa saw a copper-colored domed disc sitting on the road lift off with tongues of flame; the road surface was found caved in and burned.
Background
Just after midnight constables John Lockem and Koos de Klerk were patrolling on the Pretoria–Bronkhorstspruit highway in South Africa when their police van's headlights illuminated a domed, disc-shaped, copper-colored object about 30 feet in diameter sitting on the road. Within seconds it lifted off, emitting tongues of flame from two tubes or channels on its underside; flames from the macadam surface shot about 3 feet into the air and kept burning long after the object was out of sight. Later investigation showed part of the road caved in as if from a heavy weight, with the gravel separated from the tar in a severely burned area about 6 feet across. Lt. Col. J. B. Brits, district commandant of Pretoria North, told the media the incident was considered "of a highly secret nature" and under inquiry "in top circles"; road samples were analyzed by a leading scientific agency, but the report was never made public.
