Background
At 2:02 p.m. on April 2, 1966, James Kibel, a Melbourne businessman and member of the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society, saw a shiny, hemispherical object above his garden in Balwyn, Victoria, estimated at 20–25 feet across and 120 feet up. He said it seemed to float down toward him and resembled a big mushroom with a stalk pointing toward the earth. He took a Polaroid photo, after which the object took off and disappeared to the north. Optics professor B. Roy Frieden of the University of Arizona later found a line of discontinuity across the image suggesting a montage. In 2017 Canadian researcher François Beaulieu re-examined the original, noted the reflection of the house in the object and attributed the line to unevenly spread Polaroid developing chemicals. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
