Background

At 7:50 p.m. businessman Ronald F. Sullivan was driving at about 60 mph along the Wimmera Highway near Burkes Flat, Victoria, when he saw a light near the road and the headlights of his car suddenly bent to the right, lighting up a fence. He braked and saw in an adjacent field a column of light about 25 feet high, shaped like an inverted ice cream cone, which rose to 20 feet before the whole light complex disappeared without noise. Sullivan drove on to Wycheproof, where he checked his lights and found nothing wrong. On the night of April 7, 19-year-old Gary Taylor was killed at the same spot when his car left the road and hit a tree, and police found a circular impression about 2–5 inches deep and 5 feet across in the freshly plowed field.
