At 3:30 a.m. on June 24, 1966, Richmond police officer William L. Stevens Jr. saw a large, dirigible-like object with green and yellow lights hovering over the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike and chased it into Hanover County at more than 100 mph.
Background
At 3:30 a.m. on June 24, 1966, Officer William L. Stevens Jr. of the Richmond, Virginia, Police Department was patrolling north on Meadowbridge Road near the city limits in Car 625 when he noticed odd greenish-yellow lights in the direction of the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds (now the Richmond Raceway). He radioed the dispatcher and drove ahead, and above the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike saw a large, dirigible-like object hovering, with a row of alternating green and yellow lights around its perimeter and surrounded by a mist; it seemed about 100–125 feet long and 30–40 feet high, with no visible structural details. When Stevens accelerated toward it, the object immediately turned about 90° and moved swiftly away, keeping its distance as he sped up. The chase continued into Hanover County at more than 100 mph, until after 10–15 minutes the object suddenly accelerated and disappeared within seconds. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
