Background

Kimberly Lodge, Ellen Kenney and Janice Shafer, aged 16–17, were driving near Methuen, Massachusetts, when they saw a string of nine or ten bright red lights on a dark object moving over a field. The object hovered and swung around, showing lights of a different colour and arrangement: four glowing lights in a trapezoid, red on top and white at the base, seemingly reflecting off a metal surface. When the girls stopped to watch, their car stalled and the radio and lights went off. The object moved slowly and then shot away at high speed. Occupants of a second car about 3 miles away also saw seven or eight bright lights flying low.
