Background

At 8:00 p.m. Dicky Amox, 18, was driving on US Highway 283 about five miles east of Mangum, Oklahoma, with his uncle Billy Gray and his two sisters when he noticed a bright, loud object shaped like a butane tank or large cigar hovering about 200 feet above the car. It matched his speed and roared like a jet, following the car to his parents' home about seven miles east of Mangum. From 8:30 to 8:50 p.m. the family, including his parents Elvis A. and Colene Griffin, watched it hover over the car and the house; when Amox drove off again to test it, it kept pacing him and hovered directly overhead when he stepped out. The family called the police twice; at 9:30 p.m. the object veered away to the northwest and disappeared. Highway Patrolman Charlie Townsend, Deputy Max Bunger and Mangum policeman Herschel Copeland searched the area but found nothing. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
