Background
Around 7:45 p.m. on 30 May 1967, two men driving southwest of Palmerston North, New Zealand, spotted an orange, fluorescent, mushroom-shaped object. At first it hovered, then moved from left to right across the highway ahead of them; the driver slowed down and they watched it for 10β12 minutes, estimating it to be half a mile away and at one point only about 20 feet above the ground. Around the same time, Palmerston North residents heard a high-pitched humming followed by a loud swishing noise but saw nothing outside. Meanwhile, two aircrew members at RNZAF Base Ohakea heard a similar humming and rushed outside to see a brilliant orange 'flashy streak' lasting only a few seconds. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
