Background

At 5:15 a.m. at least five witnesses at two independent locations about 5 miles west of Corning saw an oblong, metallic-appearing object with a brilliant light on top and a smaller light on the bottom near the front. Jay Munger, proprietor of an all-night bowling alley, and police officers Frank Rakes and James Overton described a dark-gray flattened sphere with a brilliant upward light beam on top, a smaller, dimmer downward light below and a dark band around the middle. Two men north of Corning saw the object independently. The witnesses estimated its diameter at 50–100 feet. It first appeared to hover, then moved slowly a few hundred feet above the ground and finally picked up speed and disappeared to the south after about 10 minutes. Eberhart cites James E. McDonald's statement to the 1968 symposium of the US House Committee on Science and Astronautics. The account follows the entry in George M. Eberhart's chronology UFOs and Intelligence (CUFOS) and the sources cited there; it is not an independent determination by From Beyond Space.
